Dr. Martin Hirschnitz-Garbers

graduated from Leuphana University Lueneburg in 2004 as an environmental scientist and earned his Ph.D. in natural resource management and climate adaptation in 2011.

Upon completion of his Ph.D., Martin joined Ecologic Institute as the coordinator for resource efficiency and waste management, where he focuses on the analysis of policies concerning the decoupling of resource use and economic growth, as well as waste management and sustainable resource management.

He is Coordinator of the DYNAMIX project.

Katharina Umpfenbach

is a political scientist by training and also holds an MSc. in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford. At Ecologic Institute, she has worked extensively on policy evaluation and impact assessment, mainly in the field of climate and energy policy. Another focus of her research work is sustainability of bioenergy.

Katharina leads WP 1 of the DYNAMIX project.

Gerald Berger

MSc, is Senior Research Fellow and Project Manager at the Research Institute for Managing Sustainability (RIMAS) at the Vienna University of Economics. He studied political science (University of Salzburg, Austria) as well as sustainability, planning and environmental policy (Cardiff University, UK).

Since 2008, he has been managing the Office of the European Sustainable Development Network (ESDN), an informal network of policy-makers who are responsible for National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDSs) in the EU-27 and other European countries.

His main areas of expertise are sustainable development, governance, environmental policy, sustainable consumption, policy analysis, policy strategies, and knowledge brokerage between science and policy.

In DYNAMIX, he leads Work Package 7 and is thus responsible for stakeholder integration in the project, organization of the Policy Platforms and final conference, as well as general dissemination activities.

Martha Bicket

has a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Warwick, and an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London, where she specialised in environmental economics and policy.

Her research interests and experience include the design of effective second-hand markets for sustainable consumption; social barriers to smart homes for energy reduction; and optimal social discount rates for the appraisal of projects and policies with long-term consequences. She also co-coordinates the Sustainable Development Research Network, a UK-funded initiative to facilitate better evidence and research in policy-making for sustainable development.

Martha is a contributing researcher on Work Packages 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Dr. Andrea Bigano

holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), an MSc. in Environmental Economics from the University College London (UK), and a degree in Economics from Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (Milan, Italy).

He is Senior Researcher at Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and Scientist at the Italian “Euro- Mediterranean Center on Climate Change” (CMCC). His research activities focus on energy efficiency and related policies, clean energy options in the EU and in China, and, on a different note, on the interactions between climate change and tourism.

He is the scientific supervisor of the DYNAMIX project at FEEM and work-package leader of Work Package 6 on “Ex-ante analysis of selected policy mixes”.

Peter Börkey

Peter Börkey, Environment Directorate at OECD, has been working on international and local environmental policy issues for nearly 20 years. For the past 15 years he has worked for the OECD, primarily on issues relating to water, business and environment, as well as infrastructure finance. He is now leading OECD work on waste management and resource productivity, with a strong focus on sustainable materials management, nanowaste and economic instruments for waste management.

Prior to this, Mr Börkey has been leading OECD’s cooperation with countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus in the area of water management, as well as leading work in the framework of the OECD Horizontal Water Programme focusing on the financing of water supply and sanitation in developing countries.

Before joining the OECD, Mr Börkey worked as a consultant, specialized in environmental economics. Mr Börkey holds degrees in Economics and Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin and University of Grenoble in France.

 

Dr. Francesco Bosello

graduated from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where he received a Masters degree in Economics from the University College of London (UK) and a Doctoral degree in Economics from the University of Venice. He is presently associate researcher at the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) of Milan, assistant professor of economics at the University Statale of Milan and affiliate scientist of the Italian “Euromediterranean Center on Climate Change” (CMCC). His main interests are focused on climate-change impacts, policy and modeling, with particular emphasis on negotiation aspects of international environmental agreements and on optimal policy design considering adaptation and mitigation options.

In DYNAMIX, he is working on applying CGE models within Work Package 6.

Dr. Maciej Bukowski

PhD in Economics, president of WISE Institute. His research focuses on public finance, and the theory and practice of economic growth and labour economics. Author and co-author of various analytical reports, strategic documents, policy papers and press articles regarding, among others, macroeconomics, climate and energy policy, innovativeness, pension system and the labor market.

In DYNAMIX, Maciej is coordinating the research at WISE Institute, with particular focus on applying DSGE modelling for the quantitative socio-economic analysis within Work Package 6.

Mariaester Cassinelli

studied Environmental Sciences and Sciences and Technologies for Environment and Land, and completed a Masters degree in Information Technologies for the New Economy at the Bicocca University of Milan, Italy.

She has been working as researcher and project manager at Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) since 2003. Currently she is involved as project manager in European and international projects within the research programmes “Climate Change and Sustainable Development” and “Energy: Resources and Markets”. As a member of the “Fund-raising and Projects Office” at FEEM, Mariaester is involved in the management of all FEEM’s funded projects.

She is in charge of the project management of the DYNAMIX project at FEEM.

Paul Ekins
Paul Ekins has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of London and is Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy at and Director of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, University College London. Among many other memberships, he is also a member of UNEP'S International Resource Panel and was Chairman of the Government-funded National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP), the UK’s most successful programme to improve resource productivity. In 2011 he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the DG Environment Commissioner’s High-Level Economists Expert Group on Resource Efficiency and a member of the European Commission's high-level European Resource Efficiency Platform. Dr. Tomas Ekvall

has been working since 1987 as academic and contract researcher on methods for systems analysis and futures studies. He earned a PhD in methodology for life cycle assessment at Chalmers University of Technology in 1999 and became Associate Professor in 2004. Since 2005 he is employed at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. During 2006-12 he was head of the Swedish waste-policy research program Towards Sustainable Waste Management.

In DYNAMIX, he coordinates the research at IVL and acts as senior advisor on methods.

Andreas Endl

has a background in environmental science and human ecology. Since 2010, he has been working as a Research Fellow at the Research Institute for Managing Sustainability (RIMAS) at the Vienna University of Economics (WU).

His current research activities focus on monitoring and evaluating sustainable development (“sustainable development” and “sustainable consumption and production” indicators) as well as natural resource policy in Europe.

In DYNAMIX, he assists with the organization of the Policy Platforms and the final conference, as well as the coordination with other Work Package leaders on implementing Work Package 7.

Pawel Kazmierczyk

Pawel Kazmierczyk is a project manager responsible for work on resource efficiency and material flows at the European Environment Agency (EEA) in Copenhagen. Since starting at the EEA in 2002, he co-authored various EEA reports on resource efficiency, decoupling, and sustainable consumption and production.

Prior to joining the EEA, Pawel worked on cleaner production programs in Latin America (with the UN Industrial Development Organization) and on various business and environment initiatives in Eastern Europe (at the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe).

Polish by nationality, Pawel holds a degree in environmental engineering from Poland, in environmental management from the Netherlands, and in international relations and economics from the United States. In his free time, Pawel enjoys travel, aviation, and photography.

Mary Ann Kong

Senior Consultant at BIO Intelligence Service, holds a Masters in Environmental Risks and Sustainable Development from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po Paris). She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in International relations and Economic Development from Mount Holyoke College (USA). At BIO, Mary Ann is currently working on corporate social responsibility, sustainable production and consumption, and international cooperation.

In DYNAMIX, Mary Ann is working on the analysis of inefficiencies and drivers of resource consumption in Europe.

Leonardo Mazza

graduated from the LSE with an MSc in Environmental Policy and Regulation in 2008. He also holds a double Masters’ degree in International Affairs and Governance from Sciences Po Paris and the University of St Gallen.

Leonardo joined IEEP in 2010 and is a Policy Analyst in the environmental economics programme. Some of his most recent assignments involved work on the role of nature in the transition to a green economy, natural capital accounting and mainstreaming nature’s values into decision-making. He has also contributed to projects involving assessments of the efficiency and effectiveness of policy initiatives in the area of environmental taxation and resource efficiency.

He is responsible for delivering parts of IEEP’s input to the DYNAMIX project.

Francesca Montevecchi

holds a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering (University of Rome "Sapienza", Italy) with specialization in environmental technologies, environmental protection and modeling.

She works in several FP7 projects, concerning in particular the monitoring of FP7 projects’ impact on EU sustainability goals with a special focus on waste, resource efficiency, technology dissemination and diffusion.

In DYNAMIX, she assists with stakeholder integration, the organization of the Policy Platforms and the final conference, as well as general dissemination activities.

Shailendra Mudgal

Executive Director of BIO Intelligence Service, was trained as an environmental engineer/economist in India and France. He has two decades of experience in environmental consulting and has conducted impact assessments and economic analysis on a wide range of environment and energy policy areas. He was a co-author of the 2011 UNEP Green Economy Report and also contributed to the 2010 State of the Environment Report of the European Environment Agency. He currently administers various projects for EU institutions, in particular the framework contract on sustainable management of resources.

In DYNAMIX he will be contributing with his experience to ensure the relevance of the project for policy makers as well as the overall scientific quality.

David Palm

is an expert in environmental modelling with a special focus on waste and waste prevention. He works as a senior project manager at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, which he joined in 2009. David has an MSc. in Engineering Automation and Mechatronics and an MSc. in Industrial Ecology from Chalmers University of Technology.

In DYNAMIX, he coordinates the environmental modelling in Work Packages 2 and 6.

Alvaro de Prado Trigo

Senior Consultant at BIO Intelligence Service, holds a BSc+MSc in Environmental Sciences from University of the Basque Country (Spain). At BIO, Alvaro works on environmental policy analysis in the fields of ecodesign, energy efficiency and resource efficiency.

In DYNAMIX, he is working on the analysis of drivers for inefficiencies in the use of resources.

Aldo Ravazzi Douvan
Senior Adviser at the Italian Ministry of Environment on Green Tax Reforms, Green Growth and Resource Efficiency. One of the promoters of the OECD Recommendations on Resource Efficiency and Resource Productivity and the negotiating expert for the G8-3R Kobe Action Plan. Dr. Daniela Russi

graduated in Environmental Economics at the University of Siena, Italy, and obtained a PhD in Environmental Sciences/Ecological Economics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2007, with a thesis on integrated assessment of energy policies.

Before joining IEEP in April 2012, Daniela worked at two other institutions, where her research involved environmental policies, payment for ecosystem services, material flow accounting, public participation, stakeholder analysis and environmental communication. At IEEP, she works as a Policy Analyst in the environmental economics group, contributing to research projects on payments for ecosystem services, policies on water and wetlands and ecosystem capital/environmental accounting.

She is responsible for delivering parts of IEEP’s input to the DYNAMIX project.

Aleksander Śniegocki

Analyst at WISE Institute, he specializes in analysis of new sources of economic growth in the globalized world, economics of innovation and prospects for low-emission economic transition. His main interests are new technologies and resource constraints as key factors influencing future socio-economic development.

In DYNAMIX, Aleksander focuses on the qualitative social impact analysis within Work Package 5.

Dr. Adrian Tan

Project Manager, holds a PhD in sustainable design methodologies from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Adrian works on projects for the European Commission and other national governmental organisations related to resource efficiency, ecodesign and eco-innovation policy.

In DYNAMIX, he leads Work Package 2 on identifying the reasons for (in)efficiency and is otherwise the daily project coordinator and contact person at BIO.

Robin Vanner

has an MSc in Environmental Policy from Imperial College in London (ICCET) and more than ten years’ experience as a consultant and researcher on environmental policy issues.

Having previously worked on resource efficiency projects, he is currently responsible for developing a research programme in pro-environmental behavioural science. His expertise as an environmental economist also includes regulatory cost assessments and sustainability assessments.

Robin leads PSI’s input to the DYNAMIX project, specialising in behaviour and paradigms.

Carina Vopel
Carina Vopel has been actively involved in Resource Efficiency policy development at the European Commission since mid-2010 ("Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe" adopted in September 2011). She is heading the DG Environment "Resource Efficiency & Economic Analysis" Unit since October 2011. Her areas of responsibility include the coordination of Resource Efficiency policy implementation.
